Bringing Hope, Unity, and Transformation to Liberia’s Ghettos Through Football and the Gospel of Jesus Christ

Football is more than a game in Liberia.

It is a passion that unites communities, creates opportunities, and brings people together across every generation.

The Liberation Cup is an annual football tournament created by Liberation Center Liberia to reach the ghettos of Monrovia and surrounding communities with a message of hope, purpose, and transformation through Jesus Christ.

This tournament is designed specifically for the Zogos and disadvantaged youth of Liberia—to remind them that they are valuable, they are not forgotten, and they have a future and purpose in God’s Kingdom.

A Tournament with a Greater Purpose

Each year, ghetto communities throughout Monrovia and the surrounding areas assemble football teams to compete in the Liberation Cup.

These teams represent their communities with pride, determination, and a desire to be crowned the Football King of Liberia’s ghettos for the year.

The tournament takes place the weekend before Decorations Day, which Liberation Center Liberia celebrates as:

Zogo Liberation Day

A day dedicated to celebrating freedom, restoration, and the power of Jesus Christ to transform lives.

The winning team is crowned the Liberation Cup Champion and receives the Championship Trophy during a special celebration held in their community.

The following day, Liberation Center Liberia returns to the winning ghetto to celebrate with the people, present the trophy, provide food for the entire community, and host a Holy Spirit-filled celebration of joy, unity, and thanksgiving.

Praise the Lord!

A Celebration of Transformation

The Liberation Cup is about much more than football.

It is about reaching people where they are.

It is about building trust with communities that have often been rejected and forgotten.

It is about showing the Zogos and disadvantaged youth of Liberia that they are not throwaway people—they are people of value, created in the image of God, with a purpose and destiny.

Through this tournament, relationships are built, conversations begin, and opportunities are created to share the message that Jesus Christ saves, heals, restores, and gives new life.

Marching Into a New Future

The opening day of the Liberation Cup begins with a powerful celebration as teams from the ghettos gather and march in a parade through the capital city of Monrovia toward the tournament field.

This public celebration represents something greater than a sporting event.

It represents a declaration:

The forgotten are being remembered.

The rejected are being valued.

The broken are being restored.

A new future is possible through Jesus Christ.

Raising Up a New Generation

Liberation Center Liberia believes that the young people of Liberia are not defined by their past, their circumstances, or the labels society has placed upon them.

They can become:

  • Leaders
  • Fathers and mothers
  • Skilled workers
  • Business owners
  • Community servants
  • Ministers of the Gospel
  • Disciples of Jesus Christ

The Liberation Cup exists to inspire transformation and encourage young men and women to leave behind the destructive paths of addiction and crime and become successful, productive, law-abiding citizens who bring glory to God.

From the Ghettos to the Kingdom of God

The Liberation Cup is a picture of what God is doing through Liberation Center Liberia.

Where there was hopelessness, God is bringing hope.

Where there was division, God is bringing unity.

Where there was darkness, God is shining His Light.

Where there were people forgotten by society, God is raising up Sons and Daughters of Thunder.

To God be the Glory!
